Have you ever had the wind knocked out of you?
Twice last week, I had the wind knocked out of me: once physically, and a second time spiritually. I was sitting with a gentleman who creates discipleship resources for families, and he asked my wife Emily and me a simple yet profound question: “Do your kids see you read the Bible?”
I wanted my answer to be an emphatic yes. Instead, my hesitant response of “not enough” felt like a spiritual gut punch that knocked the wind right out of me. I thought about all the things my kids see me do or teach them, and how, at the end of the day, there is only one thing I can point them toward that will truly transform their lives: prioritizing God’s Word.
If your spouse, kids, friends, or co-workers were asked in an interview what matters most to you, where would your relationship with Jesus land on their list?
There are plenty of things we do that aren't inherently wrong. But if we fail to demonstrate our relationship with Jesus to those we love most, what kind of love are we truly showing them? What kind of relationship do we actually have?
In Deuteronomy 6:4–8, God commands His people:
“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.”
God calls us to weave His Word into every part of our lives—starting right inside the most sacred gathering place we have: our homes.
As a church family, we hold God’s Word to the highest standard, because through it, we learn how to walk in a real, life-changing relationship with Him. Two practical ways we value Scripture at Palmetto Life are through Life Class and Life Groups.
I would like to personally invite you to join us this Wednesday for Life Class and explore our Life Groups starting this September. These are two incredible places to help you take that next step in opening God’s Word.
Be a Blessing,
Pastor Matthew Phillips
